I posted back in August that I’d started playing guitar again, focusing on Django-style gypsy jazz. Well, I’m happy to report that I’m still playing! So far progress has been slow, but I’m actually getting pretty adept at the three and four-note chord voicings that are the bread and butter of the pompe style of rhythm guitar.

One of the things I promised myself if I kept playing was to get a new guitar to replace my crappy old Aria that cost $200 when I bought it in 1976. It’s worth a lot less than that now, let me tell you! Anyway, I got a great deal through Gryphon Instruments in Palo Alto on a Gitane DG-255 gypsy jazz guitar. I’ve been playing it about a month, and I love it! I didn’t know until I started learning about this music how different it would sound from a regular flattop guitar, but because of the construction (it’s actually an archtop, it turns out) it just sounds gypsy automatically.

I’ll post some pictures of my guitar when I get a chance.
